The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Palestine, Dr. Varsen O.V. Aghabekian, has arrived in Ghana on Saturday for a three-day visit.
The visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Ghana and Palestine. It is also expected to focus on enhancing political consultations and exploring areas of collaboration between the two nations.
Her itinerary includes meetings with Ghanaian officials, including the Vice President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Palestine Embassy in Accra yesterday, Dr. Aghabekian commended Ghana for its support to the Palestinian people.
She highlighted the volatile situation in Gaza and the West Bank, citing ongoing attacks, human rights violations, and the plight of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. The Minister therefore called for a sustainable ceasefire, increased humanitarian assistance, and the opening of Gaza’s crossings.
Dr. Aghabekian emphasised Palestine’s priority of achieving a free, independent state, with peace and security for all neighbours, including Israel.
Meanwhile, Dr. Aghabekian presented an award signed by President Mahmoud Abbas and a medal of appreciation to the President of Ghana Solidarity Campaign for the Palestinian People, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr.
The award recognises his distinguished role in promoting friendship and cooperation between Ghana and Palestine, and his efforts in supporting the Palestinian people and their just cause for freedom and independence.
The Minister also planted a “Palestinian-Ghana Friendship Tree,” a symbol of friendship, peace, and cooperation between the two countries.
Mr. Pratt expressed gratitude to Palestine for the honour, pledging his continuous support to the Palestinian cause. He emphasised the importance of speaking out against injustices, particularly in the context of journalists being killed in Gaza, calling on his fellow journalists to join in solidarity with Palestine to ensure the world remains informed and vigilant in the pursuit of justice and press freedom.
