Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has renewed his commitment to establishing a comprehensive welfare system aimed at addressing the needs of grassroots members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should he become the party’s flagbearer and subsequently, President of Ghana.
Speaking at the start of his nationwide campaign in Sene East in the Bono East Region yesterday, Dr Bawumia said the initiative was designed to strengthen the welfare of party loyalists and ensure that their contributions to the NPP’s success are properly recognised and rewarded.
As part of his broader plan to support the party’s base, Dr Bawumia said he would allocate a minimum of ten government appointments to each constituency, in addition to a welfare framework that directly responds to the needs of polling station executives and electoral area coordinators.
“You need to understand people's problems before you can help them and I've taken my time to understand the issues with the grassroots members of our party,” he said. “The problems of our party members are not the same. Some need loans for their businesses, some need fertilisers for their farms, some need scholarships for their children, and some need medical attention.”
To ensure effective implementation, Dr Bawumia announced plans to create a Welfare Database System that would capture and track the individual concerns of party members. According to him, the database will be managed by constituency coordinators, who will be responsible for updating members’ welfare needs and facilitating timely interventions.
“I want to institute something called the Welfare Database System with coordinators in all constituencies who will be in charge of coordinating the welfare database system,” he explained.
He added that a Presidential Coordinator would oversee the entire structure and work directly with constituency coordinators to ensure accountability and responsiveness.
“Every three months, we will have a review of the database to see who we have been able to help and who is outstanding. This will ensure that we take away bottlenecks and delays in extending support to grassroots members who need urgent support,” Dr Bawumia stated.
The former Vice President’s message formed part of his campaign strategy to re-energise the NPP’s base ahead of the party’s presidential primaries and to highlight his commitment to improving the livelihoods of the rank and file of the party.
