The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies(MMDAs) to clear public spaces and visible filth by 8 am daily, starting Thursday, September 4, 2025, as part of a strict new sanitation regime.
The directive comes ahead of the relaunch of the National Sanitation Day on Saturday, September 6, by President John Dramani Mahama under the “Clean Up Ghana Agenda.”
Speaking at a press conference, sector Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, indicated that sanitation will now serve as a key performance indicator for all Chief Executives, with assemblies required to desilt drains, remove waste heaps, and keep ceremonial streets and markets clean.
The Ministry has also announced a sanitation hotline and central monitoring dashboard to hold assemblies accountable and encourage citizen participation.
“We will keep track of assemblies and MMDAs and those that perform and those that do not will be known. Sanitation is now a key performance Your performance indicator for all MMDCEs. Your performance as CE will be judged directly on your performance on cleanliness on all areas in your jurisdiction.”
