The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has officially unveiled a 25-member Council of Elders aimed at playing a key role in the governance and advisory functions of the party.
The formation of this new leadership comes in response to the reduced membership of the previous Council of Elders, which was affected by old age, health issues, death and the retirement of several members from active politics.
This situation, the party noted, hindered the Council’s ability to effectively fulfil its mandate. To address this, the party has strengthened the Council’s capacity by nominating and inaugurating 25 new members.
The selection criteria for these new members focused on age, experience, character and dedication to the party.
The list of the inaugurated members includes International Political Economy, Conflict and Security expert, Prof. Vladimir Antwi Danso; Former Managing Director of Cocoa Marketing Company, Alhaji Mohammed Gado; Volta Regional Chairman of the CPP, Prince Vincent Ahiadzro, Educationist, Dr Adolf Lutterodt, and Secretary to the Council, Nii Adjetey Sowah.
Others are William Asua Azure, Dr James Amoateng, Chris Anaba Allem, George Ankomah Mensah Esq., Cudjoe Amenya, Bibiana Mackey, John Benjamin Daniels, Richard Nat. Nyanyo, Ebenezer Owusu and Eli Kotoku Eliikem.
The rest are Dr Amusu Kwaggrey, John Twum Barimah, Iddrisu Fuseini, Prof. Essumang Johnson, Alhaji Tijani, Araba Bentsi Enchill, Alhaji Mustapha Kalifara, Samuel Yaw Asamoah, Dr B.B. Osei and Ashiboye Mensah.
The CPP's flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Nana Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah, emphasised the importance of establishing strong internal structures within the party to ensure a united effort toward regaining political power in the coming years.
She stressed that the CPP cannot recapture power without effective internal organisation to resolve issues and align all efforts toward the shared goal of returning to power.
“The reason we are here today is because we want to run this country based on the ideology that is best for Ghana, which we all know. But how can we achieve that if we’re not organised and structured in a way that can take us there?” she asked.
“This is one of the most important organs because any conflict or issue that comes before it will be addressed based not only on our constitution but also in the supreme interest of the party,” she said.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Prince Vincent Ahiadzro, the Chairman of the Council of Elders, Comrade Felix Amoah, explained that the issues of old age, ill-health and death had led to the nomination and inauguration of new members, in line with Article 69(a) of the CPP Constitution.
He further stated that the constitution allows for the admission of new members at the National Delegates Congress, provided certain conditions are met.
"Today is a great day that will be remembered in the Convention People's Party annals.
It is a day that the Council of Elders has taken a paradigm shift to break new grounds in its efforts to revitalise its organ as part of the reorganisation exercise of the party".
He also urged the new members to embrace the opportunity to serve the people, always remembering that selfless and loyal service is its reward.
In attendance were the CPP's running mate for the 2024 election, Mr Wayoe Ghanamannti, and other prominent party members.
