Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has hailed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a leader of "impeccable integrity," declaring that he is the kind of leader Ghana needs.
Mr. Agyapong, who was among ten candidates who contested for the NPP’s flagbearer position alongside Dr. Bawumia, has since lent his full support to the Vice President's presidential campaign.
Speaking during Dr. Bawumia’s visit to Adaklu in the Volta Region, Mr. Agyapong praised Dr. Bawumia for his unblemished reputation after eight years as Vice President.
“This is a man with strong personal integrity. He has been Vice President for eight years, and nobody has been able to find a speck of dirt on his shirt. That tells you a lot about him,” Mr. Agyapong stated, addressing the Chiefs and people of Adaklu.
Highlighting Dr. Bawumia's empathy and leadership qualities, Mr. Agyapong added, "He understands people, he loves people, and he cares for people. I believe he is the kind of leader Ghanaians need."
The former NPP General Secretary also addressed the significance of Dr. Bawumia’s election as the party’s flagbearer, noting it had dispelled longstanding perceptions that the NPP is an “Akan party.” As the first Muslim to lead a major political party in Ghana, Bawumia's nomination represents a historic moment for inclusivity, Agyapong said.
His election win, Mr. Agyapong pointed out, was also a milestone in NPP history. "There were 10 of us in the contest, including myself, but he made history by winning 61% of the vote. That is something no first-time aspirant in our party has ever achieved—not Adu Boahene, not Kufuor, not Nana Akufo-Addo."
Mr. Agyapong stressed that Dr. Bawumia’s appeal extends beyond the NPP, earning respect across religious and traditional divides. "He commands broad support from Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists alike. Wherever he goes, he shows respect, and that resonates with people."
