The Paramount Chief of the Peki Traditional Area, Torgbuiga Deiga Kwadzo Dei XII, has praised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for transforming the nature of political campaigning in Ghana by focusing on issues rather than insults.
Speaking during Dr. Bawumia's visit to Peki in the South Dayi Constituency as part of his campaign tour of the Volta Region, the Paramount Chief remarked on the Vice President’s impact since becoming the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flagbearer. He noted that Dr. Bawumia’s approach has contributed to a shift in the country’s political discourse.
"This particular year's political activity has taken a new turn, and I take a special notice of it," said Torgbuiga Deiga Kwadzo Dei XII. "In the past, political activities had been turbulent and full of insults, and things that are not palatable for our children to learn from."
The Paramount Chief explained that prior to Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, political campaigns in Ghana were frequently marred by insults and personal attacks. However, since the Vice President entered the race, his issue-based approach has helped change that dynamic.
"Before Alhaji Bawumia was elected to lead the NPP, the trend had started. Even people who had not declared themselves candidates started with insults and threats, but since he joined the fray, we noticed that his campaign has always been issue-based, and this has changed the landscape of our campaigning for now," he observed.
While acknowledging that occasional insults and threats still surface, Torgbuiga Deiga Kwadzo Dei XII commended Dr. Bawumia for significantly altering the tone of political dialogue in Ghana.
"Yes, we still hear a few threats here and there, a few insults here and there. But what had been the status quo has changed, and I think we need to commend the flagbearer of the NPP for this," the Paramount Chief stated.
He was keen to stress that his comments were a sincere assessment of Dr. Bawumia’s conduct, rather than an attempt at flattery.
"Those who know me know that I don't flatter people. If I need to tell you, you're a fool, I will look into your face and tell you, you are a fool. So whatever I say should not be taken as if because the Vice President is here, I want to flatter him," Torgbuiga Deiga Kwadzo Dei XII said firmly.
Dr. Bawumia’s visit to Peki is part of his broader campaign tour through the Volta Region as he seeks to bolster support ahead of the December elections.
