A second week into the partial lockdown of the country by President Akufo-Addo and the quarantining of 214 people infected with coronavirus, has sobered the Tema West Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into thanking God for the leadership of the President.
Mr Dennis Amfo-Sefah pointed out that the President's orders made the difference between life and death for the vast majority of Ghanaians as community transmission was insignificant.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Mr. Amfo-Sefah, who is popularly called Nana Boakye, said if President Akufo-Addo had not been proactive and quick thinking, the whole country would have been in a health crisis.
"I think that we have God to thank for the quick thinking of President Akufo-Addo. Imagine, that he had not issued the mandatory quarantine orders that he issued, the almost one hundred infected persons who traveled into the country would have mingled among us.
"And now, in the midst of the lockdown, look at how quickly the number of infected persons has risen to 214 in just one week. If the President had not locked down the country and initiated contact tracing, all of these persons would have been infecting people around. It is estimated that by now up to 100,000 Ghanaians would be infected," Nana Boakye said.
According to him, every Ghanaian had an enjoinment to thank God for President Akufo-Addo's leadership at a critical time like this. "When we go on our knees to pray, we must first thank God for the quick thinking decisions and directives that President Akufo-Addo gave," he said.
Ghana's case count is now 214 infections, with five deaths. The infected persons had mostly been picked out after they were mandatorily quarantined under President Akufo-Addo's order.
It is as the infected persons under mandatory quarantine were showing symptoms that the President then closed all the borders of the country to prevent any persons from coming in, while the country traced contacts of the already infected.
To make this smooth, a quick thinking President Akufo-Addo again issued a directive for Kumasi, Accra and Tema, the affected areas of the country to be partially locked down for two weeks. This has helped the process greatly, leading to tracing of 214 infected persons.
"Initially, when the President was considering the lockdown, some people protested and eventually, when the lockdown was announced some people were unhappy, but just a week into the lockdown, I think we have all seen the wisdom in the President's decision.
"Imagine, having all of these 214 infected people mingling with us, everybody would be at risk and many of our people would die. President Akufo-Addo locked down the country out of love for his countrymen," Nana Boakye said.
The Tema West NPP Chairman also used the opportunity to laud the sitting MP for Tema West and Deputy minister of trade, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, for efforts that were made to ensure that the people of Tema West were safe from coronavirus.
He lauded the disinfection of certain parts of the country and also developmental efforts that Mr. Ahenkorah had long been making for his Constituency
"The delegates keep calling and telling me that they have decided to retain Mr. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah as our Parliamentary Candidate for 2020 and that they would not be happy with me if that dream does not happen. What am I supposed to say? I am the Chairman of the Constituency and cannot take sides!
"All I keep telling them is that the choice is in their hands and if their own philosophy, to the effect that, 'it is he who is already on the mango tree that deserves to be pushed' then so be it. It is no secret that even with our current MP, there is no way the NDC can even hope of winning the seat from us," Nana Boakye said.
