A coalition of Volta Youth, an emerging pressure group in the Volta Region has kicked against the creation of a new region out of Volta, saying what was needed was “development, not division of the Region.”
It said instead of creating new administrative regions, government should implement its decentralisation policy effectively to bring development to deprived areas in the northern part of Volta Region.
These were contained in a petition sent to the Asogli State and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council after a peaceful demonstration through some principal streets of Ho, the Regional capital. Mr. Simon Kofi Ohene, leader of the group said the creation of a new region out of Volta was not a requirement for development since there were other administrative regions much larger than Volta but developed.
He said the creation of a new region would promote disharmony, mistrust and disunity among people of the same region and country and advised petitioners for a new region out of Volta to withdraw their request from the Commission of inquiries into the creation of new regions for the unity and rapid development of Volta Region.
The coalition called on chiefs in the Region to “resist” attempts to re-write history of the Volta Region and said it expected response to the petition in 14 days.
