A fire broke out pre-dawn Monday in a row of shanties in a central Philippine city, killing 14 people, local police said.
The blaze was put out two hours later at around 3 a.m. local time (1700 GMT Sunday) after gutting around 50 shanty houses made of planks and other
light materials in Bacolod city of Negros Occidental province, local on-line news network inquirer.net quoted police sources as saying.
About 2.5 million peso (52,410 U.S. dollars) worth of assets were lost, the report said.
The cause of the fire and other details are not immediately disclosed.
