The Chief of Chiribra-Odumase near Amasaman in the Ga West District, Nii Kwame Perbi II, has appealed to the district assembly to re-roof the only primary school in the area that was blown off in a rainstorm in March 2007.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, he said the delay in re-roofing the school building was not encouraging teaching and learning since it had made it unattractive for teachers of the school who commute from other areas to the village.
He said documents and computers donated to the school by the Coca Cola Company were also destroyed in the rainstorm.
Nii Perbi said letters had been written to the assembly but the building had still not been re-roofed forcing pupils and their teachers to have lessons in makeshift classrooms.
He expressed regret that getting teachers to accept postings to deprived areas had always been a problem for the Ghana Education Service and said "if such a situation makes it impossible for teachers to teach what would we be doing to the future of the children?"
The Chief said the community has temporarily roofed the building with bamboo and palm branches for classes to continue but immediately the weather looked like raining school had to close.
He commended the teachers for their hard work in spite of the difficult condition under which they are working and appealed for a solution to the problem in the interest of the children.
