Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in-charge of Community Policing, Ms Florence Arthur, on Friday advised community leaders to find ways of supporting volunteers who offer themselves to serve in their neighbourhood watch committees.
She explained that neighbourhood watch committees were another form of community policing, which could help remove mistrust between the police and members of the community, and help in crime prevention.
Ms Arthur was speaking at a durbar on the promotion of community policing in Koforidua Zongo.
She explained that currently the whole world was moving towards community policing because of its advantages in helping to bring policing to the doorsteps of communities and effective contribution towards crime prevention.
ACP Arthur said community policing helped the communities to appreciate the work of the police and also enabled the police to understand the communities better.
The New Juaben Municipal Commander of Police, Superintendent Asare Naami, explained that society had reached a stage where the police alone could not fight crime without communities supporting.
He urged community members who stayed with criminals to provide information to help reduce crime within the communities.
