Mr Paul Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), has urged corporate bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and stakeholders to commit resources towards development of agriculture in the country.
He said so far as Ghana's economy remained agro-based, "we need to invest in it to help tap the potentials in the sector to ensure food sufficiency and increased productivity in the wake of the global food crisis".
Mr Adu-Gyamfi, who was adjudged the best citrus farmer for the Atwima-Nwabiagya District at the 2008 National Farmers' Day, was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Dabaa at the weekend.
He said agriculture was essential in serving as a source of employment for the growing population especially the youth, professionals and technocrats, most of whom perceived the sector as mainly the preserve of the aged and illiterates.
Mr Adu-Gyamfi expressed delight that most enlightened people were now venturing into agriculture and this would benefit the nation in the long run as they would bring their expertise to bear on the sector especially adhering to the principles of mechanized farming.
Commenting on his award the NMC Chairman said his being adjudged the best citrus farmer would motivate him to strive for greater height in his agricultural endeavours.
"I am now striving to become the national best farmer all things being equal" he said and commended the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) for the honour done him.
