The Western Regional office of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, has recorded 1,208 cases between January and July this year as compared to 1,452 cases for the whole of 2007.
The seven months recorded 523 cases, which were related to failing to provide the necessities of health and life, while assault, defilement and rape cases were 258, 86 and 20 respectively.
Cases of threat was 41, offensive conduct, 39, stealing 29, abduction, 34, and criminal abortion 12.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Sekondi on Monday, Ms Cecilia Arkoh, the commander of the unit, said 163 of the cases have been sent to court.
She also indicated that 63 cases had been transferred to the department of social welfare, nine to the family tribunal, 15 to Legal Aid, four to Women in Law and development of Africa (WiLDAF), while one case had also been sent to the Commission on Human rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
Ms Arkoh also noted that 157 cases had been resolved by the unit while 796 were still under investigations.
