The government has commenced the demolition of structures at the Weija Ramsar site after Transport company Caitec failed to comply with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to reverse illegal landfilling in the area.
The President had issued the order during a recent tour of flood-prone zones in Accra, instructing the company to undo the reclamation at its own cost.
This move was aimed at facilitating proper dredging and preventing flooding as the rainy season approaches.
Despite the directive, a follow-up inspection by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on Thursday, April 10, revealed that no action had been taken by the company.
In response, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, cautioned that the law would be enforced if the company failed to comply with the directive.
The warning followed concerns that the defiance could jeopardize flood prevention efforts in the region.
Subsequently, the demolition exercise has begun to restore the site and enable the planned dredging works to proceed.
