The Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrissu, has called for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a key component of the country’s education development.
This, according to him would enable the country bridge the learning gaps to build a competitive human capital and equally compete on the global market.
Addressing a news conference in Accra last Friday as part of activities to mark the International day of Education, he said the evolving nature of technology required that the country’s education delivery was tailored to meet new demands.
The International Day of Education is celebrated annually on January 24 to highlight the importance of education in the global community and this year’s was on the theme: ‘AI and Education.’
The Minister stated that the theme for this year’s celebration sought to encourage reflections on the power of education to equip individuals and communities to navigate and understand technological advancement.
Furthermore, he explained that education was very essential for the success of all 17 of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) four goals, hence, the need to situate AI into the educational system.
Mr Iddrissu noted that the educational system must be empowered to create inclusive classrooms, adding that there was the need for digital literacy, and AI ethics to promote the agenda.
He, however, called for strong collaboration between government and private sector to dismantle barriers that marginalise girls and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) from accessing quality education.
“Education as the backbone of our educational system must be empowered to create inclusive classrooms and to design curricula that, embedded in it, will include some major actions on digital literacy,” he emphasised.
Enumerating some benefits of AI in education, he mentioned that it enabled students’ to broaden their horizons by helping them to understand more about other cultures and corners of the world beyond their school door.
“Have you noticed the joy and enthusiasm with which your children want to have access to your phones? It should tell you that they want to be part of the digital world”, he said.
Additionally, he noted that Artificial Intelligence (Al) offered tremendous prospects for revolutionisng education by facilitating personalised learning, broadening access, and cultivating inclusivity.
“And we can talk about education and today’s technical advancement in AI without mentioning many strides that have been done. AI offers exciting opportunities to personalise learning,” he outlined.
Moreover, the Minister indicated that the country required investment in critical infrastructure, including electricity, Internet connectivity, and a safe learning environment to make education accessible for all.
Mr Iddrissu added that in mid – February the President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, would open a major education review to examine the state and future of education in the country in order to improve the provision of education
