President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted the need for collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect as Ghana begins its transition process following the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the inauguration of the transition team at the Accra International Conference Centre, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the critical role the process plays in maintaining the nation’s democratic integrity.
“It is imperative that we continue to consolidate this hard-earned reputation by adhering strictly to the provisions of the Transition Act. We send a powerful message to the world that democracy thrives in Ghana, even in challenging times,” the President said.
The transition team, composed of members from both the outgoing administration and the incoming government of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, is tasked with ensuring a seamless handover of power. Key responsibilities include facilitating the continuation of vital national projects and policies without disruption.
The transition process is guided by Section 1 of the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845).
This law mandates both the incumbent President and President-elect to appoint representatives to the Transition Team within 24 hours after the declaration of the presidential election results.
This is to ensure that the transition begins promptly, irrespective of unresolved parliamentary disputes.
President Akufo-Addo called on all team members to approach their duties with unity and dedication, prioritising the nation’s best interests during this period of change. “As we embark on this transitional process, I urge all members of the team, both from the outgoing administration and the incoming, to approach this task with a spirit of collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect,” he said.
As Ghana prepares for the inauguration of President-elect Mahama on January 7, the transition team’s work will be pivotal in ensuring stability and continuity, further solidifying the country’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
