Ghana will commemorate the 40th edition of the National Farmers’ Day in the Greater Accra Region on Friday, November 8, instead of the usual December due to the 2024 general election.
This year’s event is on the theme, ‘Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,’ to highlight the country’s commitment to adopting agricultural practices that effectively address the challenges posed by climate change.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Accra on Wednesday.
It said as part of the lead-up to this landmark celebration, Ghana would host a five-day National Agricultural Fair, Agrifest Ghana 2024, from November 4 to 8, 2024.
“This event will showcase Ghana’s rich agricultural heritage and serve as a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange and innovation, bringing together farmers and stakeholders from across the country”, it disclosed.
The statement also noted that the National Farmers’ Day celebration would culminate in the National Awards Night Ceremony on November 8, during which President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, would honour outstanding farmers in 16 award categories.
These prestigious awards, it revealed, included the Overall National Best Farmer, National Best Livestock Farmer, National Best Female Farmer, and National Best Physically Challenged Farmer, recognising the invaluable contributions of farmers to the nation’s agricultural sector.
Moreover, it stated that given the urgency of addressing climate change, the focus on building climate-resilient agriculture is crucial for ensuring food security and sustainability in Ghana.
“The National Farmers’ Day celebration would serve as a vital platform for promoting dialogue and innovation, encouraging farmers and stakeholders to adapt to environmental changes and adopt best practices in agriculture.
“As we approach this significant event, we invite all Ghanaians to join in celebrating our farmers, whose resilience and dedication are essential to the nation’s food security and economic growth”, it said.
The statement also indicated that the upcoming celebrations would provide a fitting tribute to the hardworking farmers across the country.
