The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has emphasised the importance of providing urgent support to the Ghanaian media to ensure they can effectively fulfill their role.
He highlighted the significant role the media plays in the democratic process of the country and stressed the need for them not to be left to fend for themselves.
Mr. Bagbin also pointed out that the Ghanaian media served as a vital link between the people and the country’s leadership.
Speaking at a public forum organised by the parliamentary Service Board in Hansua, Techiman, in the Bono East Region over the weekend to commemorate 30 years of parliamentary democracy in Ghana, Mr Bagbin called for a restructuring of the National Media Commission (NMC) to enhance its effectiveness.
He acknowledged the milestone of 30 years of democracy in Ghana and emphasized the need to reflect on past successes and challenges as a nation.
Despite facing governance challenges such as poor leadership, weak institutions, yellow journalism, insecurity, and economic downturn, Mr Bagbin highlighted the stable yet fragile political environment that allows for dialogue and progress.
He commended chiefs, traditional leaders, the Judiciary, state security institutions, the Electoral Commission, NCCE, clergy, and past leaders for their contributions to the establishment of the Fourth Republic.
The vice president of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Owusu Sekyere ll, who chaired the function appealed to the entire leadership of Parliament to ensure peace during and after the December general elections in the country.
He said the mayhem that occurred in Techiman in the 2020 general elections which claimed about eight lives must not be repeated anywhere else in the country so as to give true meaning to our democracy and a free electoral process.
Nana Owusu Sekyere who is also the president of the Baasa Traditional Council commended Parliament for extending their activities to the area and called for more support for the development of the region.
