The Ga Central Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), as part of its Social Auditing programme, has encouraged residents of Anyaa to actively participate in community development activities.
The Social Auditing programme is one of the NCCE’s flagship programmes under the Accountability, Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (ARAP) which requires that the Commission campaign, and advocate for accountability as well as promote good governance and reduce corruption in Ghana. It is supported by the European Union.
Ms. Cynthia Anima Boadu, Ga Central Municipal Director for NCCE, said when community members developed an interest in developmental projects in their areas, it made duty bearers accountable to them.
Ms. Boadu explained that the objective of the Social Auditing engagement was to promote community ownership of developmental projects, enhance volunteerism, and increase awareness on the operations of the Local Government in addition to empowering the citizenry to demand accountability from duty bearers.
She added that it also encourages the involvement of the residents in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of developmental projects and programmes in their community.
She therefore encouraged stakeholders of the Anyaa community to rekindle communal labour activities to help in the provision of their pressing needs.
Ms. Boadu, during the engagement led residents, and stakeholders to prioritize their needs in the Anyaa community.
They unanimously chose the provision of roads, security and streetlights, in addition to a market, Municipal Hospital, effective sanitation taskforce, and potable water.
She inaugurated a focus group which membership comprised of voluntary representatives of the various stakeholders whose mandate was to serve as a working group to spearhead the implementation of the community plan on their needs.
Dr. Emmanuel Lamptey, Ga-Central Municipal Chief Executive, on his part, informed the stakeholders that a number of developmental projects were underway in the Municipality adding that some of the roads in the area had been awarded to contractors while some in Anyaa and Antieku communities were yet to be awarded.
He gave the assurance that drainage and culverts issues in the area would be tackled alongside the construction of the roads, adding that the Assembly was in the procurement process for streetlights and a market.
On the issue of the provision of a Municipal hospital, the MCE explained that it was their intention to use part of the lorry terminal for the construction of a polyclinic for the area.
Chief Sheikh Jibril Sissy, Muslim Chief of Anyaa, who doubled as the President of the Ga Central Council of Zongo Chiefs, Nii Charbukoi III, the Mantse of Anyaa, and other stakeholders commended the NCCE for the initiative and called for more of such engagements on development ssues.
