President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Saturday appealed to all eligible Ghanaians to go out and register when the Electoral Commission (EC) begins the compilation of the new voters’ register on June 30.
“I am calling on every member and sympathizer of the NPP (New Patriotic Party) and, indeed, on all eligible Ghanaians, no matter what party they belong to; to go out and register, so that they can exercise their civic responsibilities on 7th December, to elect a government of their choice in a free, fair, peaceful and transparent election,” President Akufo-Addo said in Accra at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Council Meeting.
The meeting was held to acclaim the President with his running mate, Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the Party’s candidate for the December 7 general election.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic delegates from across the country had to observe the meeting in a virtual mode.
President Akufo-Addo said the COVID-19 pandemic, notwithstanding, Ghanaians had to strengthen their democracy.
He recounted that last Thursday, the Supreme Court, presided over by the Chief Justice, by a unanimous decision of a seven-member panel settled all the issues surrounding the voters’ register and affirmed the right of the EC to proceed with the compilation of a new register in accordance with of Constitution Instrument (CI) 126; declaring that the road has now been cleared for the EC to proceed.
In his message to the NPP delegates, President Akufo-Addo said: “We owe to ourselves and to Ghana to win the elections on 7th December decisively, to make sure that we keep the economy on track and not in the hands of people who will run it again into the ground.”
He said the NPP does not believe in the value of pitting the rich against the poor or the poor against the rich.
“We believe in helping every Ghanaian to climb up the ladder of progress and we’ve being consistent in this, not just in words, but in deeds.”
President Akufo-Addo said: “We are told that those we were responsible for the worse economic performance of the last 30 years have learnt their lessons and seek another opportunity to correct their mistakes. Dare I ask should the Presidency be for experiments? Surely not. You the Ghanaian people deserve better and you will get better on 7th December with four more years for Nana and the NPP to do more for you.”
“We have to win the election to see our many projects through to completion. We dare not leave the many structures coming up under our 1D1F scheme to be truncated. We dare not leave our free SHS to be “reviewed”. We dare not leave our roads to go unattended again; only to become part of a green book propaganda. We dare not jeopardise the digitization schedule on which we have embarked.
“I urge you, therefore, my dear friends and colleagues, to go out with the confidence that comes from your Government performing well, and running the affairs of the country competently. Tell our story to the Ghanaian people, and tell it often.”
President Akufo-Addo said a united NPP, working under his leadership, in tandem with his brilliant, resourceful, four-time running mate, Vice President Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, who had just been resoundingly acclaimed by the National Council, the man who, consistently, sends alarm and shivers down the spine of our opponents, could, in all humility, lead Ghana and the Ghanaian people to take this giant step forward.
“Let us work hard together for a great victory on 7th December, and embrace the future and our destiny,” President Akufo-Addo said.
