A School Performance Improvement Plan (SPIP) has been signed by the Nkoranza District Directorate of Education and the District Assembly with the objective of addressing challenges that militate against improvement of education in the area.
This was an outcome of a meeting of selected stakeholders of education from Nkoranza during a school performance appraisal forum (SPAM) held at Nkoranza on Monday.
The participants discussed and assessed the performances of the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the 2004 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the area.
Problems to be addressed include lack of teachers' accommodation facilities, lack of supervision of school children at home by parents, lateness and absenteeism on the part of teachers and students and child labour
An appeal was made to the Nkoranza District Assembly to assist the communities in constructing teachers bungalows while teachers were also asked to assign enough home work exercises to students.
Parents should also ensure that their children were at home in the nights.
Mr Kwabena Agyemang-Badu, District Director of Education for Nkoranza advocated for the formation of a Council for Circuit Supervisors whose responsibility would be to ensure the effective and proper management of schools.
The Council would be constituted by representatives from the local Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and senior headteachers of primary, JSS and kindergarten schools.
Mr Agyemang-Badu explained that council would check absenteeism and truancy among teachers and students and monitor the movements of teachers.
The council would also recommend to the district education directorate names of drunken teachers for them to be sanctioned.
The District GNAT Secretary Mr James Edjei Biney called on the Ministry of Education to intensify the teaching of science and mathematics in the Training Colleges, because some teachers lacked knowledge in the subjects.
