Dr Aaron Asare, a private medical practitioner, has said the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is improving on healthcare services and health status of the populace.
He said the scheme has made it affordable for the poor to easily access healthcare which has subsequently reduced self-medication to the barest minimum. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Dr Asare who is a General Family Physician at the Health Lane Hospital in Sunyani, a private health service provider, said self medication is very dangerous and advised the general public to refrain from such activities.
Whilst urging those who have still not registered with the NHIS to do so, Dr Asare called on the National Health Insurance Authority to device new strategies to assist in strengthening and sustaining the scheme. He said access to healthcare is a basic fundamental human right and commended government for her efforts to save the NHIS from collapse.
