The GCB Bank in collaboration with Third Eyecare and Vision Centre has organized a free eye screening for the inhabitants of Nanton and its surrounding communities in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality.
The screening is part of GCB Bank’s corporate social responsibility programme of giving back to society to ensure that vulnerable persons are assisted to correct defects in their eyes. Dr Kwame Oben-Nyarko, Managing Director of Third Eyecare and Vision Centre, Speaking to the media in Nanton on Monday during the screening exercise said over 1,500 persons were expected to be screened in Nanton.
He said Third Eyecare was giving free lenses and eye drops to those who have problems with their eyes and thanked GCB Bank for the support to embark on the exercise. He said it was important for every one especially those who were 40 years and above and with hypertensive conditions to check their eyes every six months to correct any defects to avoid blindness.
He said the majority of people screened at Nanton had eye infection and those who needed lenses had been given including school children to aid them to read from the black board. Mr Oben-Nyarko said with support from the GCB Bank they had also screened some people in Accra and Takoradi and that the exercise would be done in many other places to help people correct their eye defects.
He said his outfit was interested in helping reduce blindness in the country and commended the GCB Bank Limited for supporting. Mrs Thyra Obuobi, Head of GCB Bank Corporate Affairs, said the Bank would continue to embark on its corporate social responsibility programmes to benefit society. She said the Bank had 151 branches across the country, bringing it closer to the people and stressed the importance of all Ghanaians opening accounts and transacting business with GCB saying, “GCB is closer to the people and we therefore feel the needs of people in the areas that we operate”.
Similar eye screening exercise would be done in Tolon on Wednesday April 26, where more than 1,500 inhabitants are expected to be screened.
