He also expressed his gratitude to Doctor Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the AMA, for his commitment to increase access to basic education in the area.

Chief Superintendent Hagbe said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency when Mr Kwesi Hutchful, Accra Metropolitan Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the former Accra MCE handed over the Millennium school to the Ghana Prison Service.

This brings to 23 inaugurated schools, out of 122 Millennium Schools funded by the World Bank. Chief Superintendent Hagbe appealed to the public to cooperate with the AMA to realise its vision.

Mr Hutchful said the GES would continue to collaborate with the AMA to upgrade basic school infrastructures throughout Accra and called on teachers to play their role effectively. Dr Vanderpuije urged the GES to make supervision a top priority in order to achieve the expected academic standards.

He urged the incoming MCE to continue with laid out projects earmarked for the accelerated development of the city. Dr Vanderpuije said in 2009 and 2010 the AMA in collaboration with other stakeholders formulated and implemented policies that have led to a significant progress in the provision of quality basic education.

He said it is imperative that AMA’s key achievements are outlined to encourage stakeholders to do more to support government’s efforts. Dr Vanderpuije said the AMA has expanded physical access through the construction of new schools, taking away the lost hours in the shift system and strengthened school supervision to reduce teacher absenteeism.

He said the AMA also increased textbooks availability, rehabilitated the sewerage system at Dansoman, introduced the Bus Rapid Transits (BRT) and saw an increase in revenue from GHC 10 million in 2009 to GHC 40 million in 2016.
