The Tema Regional Office of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, in the first quarter of this year, recorded a decrease in the occurrence of lorry accidents within the Metropolis.
The MTTU recorded a total of 188 accidents between January and March this year, as compared to the 202 recorded during the same period in 2010.
Superintendent Daniel Ansong Dankyi, Tema Regional MTTU Commander, disclosed this to Ghana News Agency in Tema.
He said whereas the Unit documented 36 accidental deaths in the first quarter of 2010, 24 fatalities were recorded during the same period this
year.
Sup Dankyi said the number of injured victims was reduced by two as 166 people were injured in 2010, compared to the 164 recorded this
year.
A total of 284 vehicles were involved in accidents this year, while 323 vehicles were involved in accident in 2010.
Sup Dankyi said the decrease in accidents was due snap checks mounted by the MTTU and that drivers co-operated with the personnel during the operations.
He advised drivers to comply with traffic and motor laws, even when the Police were not on the road, to ensure the safety of passengers and drivers.
