President John Evans Atta Mills on Wednesday cut the sod at Kwame-Danso in the Sene District of Brong-Ahafo Region for work to commence on the 31 kilometre Atebubu-Kwame Danso road.
The President performed the ceremony on the second day of his three-day working visit to the region.
The project, to be completed within two years by a Wa-based road construction firm, A and N, would cost GH¢32.5 million and would be a single-seal bituminous surface dressing and
single-dash carriage two-way road.
Prior to the sod cutting ceremony, President Mills addressed a grand durbar jointly organised in his honour by the four paramount chiefs in the district.
The paramount chiefs are Oseadeeyo Adu Atta Ababio, President of Wiase Traditional Council, Nana Agyei Sarpong, President of Dwan (Kwame-Danso) Traditional Council, Nana Owusu Sakyi II, President of Basa Traditional Council and Nana
Nkumale, Acting President of Nkomi-Kajaji Traditional Council.
President Mills acknowledged the tremendous support of the chiefs and people of the area for the government and the District Assembly and asked them to maintain the commitment and spirit
for the holistic development of the area.
He asked the people to bear with the contractor as the execution of the project would create some problems and inconveniences, saying even though the difficulties would not be easy to bear the socio-economic benefits of the project on
completion would outweigh the difficulties.
Mr Joe Gidisu, Minister of Roads and Highways, said the road, when completed, would provide one of the shortest routes from Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo to the Volta Region.
He announced that the government was ready to provide a pontoon on the Volta River at Kwadwokrom to link the Sene District and Kete-Krachi in the Volta Region to facilitate the
movement of the people and their economic activities.
Mr Dominic Napare, District Chief Executive, in a welcoming address, outlined a number of projects that the District Assembly had undertaken within the last two years in health, water and sanitation, energy, farming and road among others.
Oseadeeyo Ababio, on behalf of the chiefs, expressed appreciation to the government and gave the assurance that they would co-operate with the contractor for the project to be completed as scheduled.
President Mills later commissioned a rural electrification project at Fiaso in the Techiman Municipality.
