Professor William Otoo Ellis, Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has counseled students to cherish hard work and discipline without which it would be difficult to achieve academic success.
He said they needed to focus more on their studies, bearing in mind that cutting corners would not help.
Prof. Ellis was speaking at the launch of the 51st Week Celebration of the Independence Hall of the University in Kumasi.
The event is under the theme; “Building a Civilized and Developed Society, a Challenge to today’s Youth.”
Prof. Ellis reiterated the importance of education to the progress of both the individual and society, and said it was on account of this that they needed to make good use of the opportunity given to them.
They should take responsibility for their own future by avoiding acts that could ruin their education.
He encouraged them to be innovative and help generate new ideas to address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.
Dr J. A. Bakang, Hall Master, said through the support of the Zenith Bank, a walk-way at the university that collapsed last year, killing one student and injuring another, had been reconstructed.
Additionally, the Hall had built a reading room with seating capacity for 50 students. This was financed from the Hall’s own internally generated funds.
Mr Gabriel Kwame Adehe, Hall President, urged the students to work hard and carry themselves well to project a good image of the Hall.
