A university lecturer has appealed to polytechnics to go into research as their contribution to the country’s development.
Dr Samuel Laryea, a lecturer at School of Construction Management and Engineering of the University of Reading in the UK, said cutting-edge research was what the country needed particularly with the oil find and its associated challenges.
He said this at the Takoradi Polytechnic after he had presented 1,200 pounds worth of Construction Management books on behalf of the West Africa Built Environment Research (WABER) to the Department of Civil Engineering.
Dr Laryea said all over the world, institutions were recognized due to their cutting-edge research.
WABER is a Research Think Tank formed by professionals in the Sciences across West Africa to consolidate ideas on research particularly on the built environment (The changes that had evolved on the natural environment due to the activities of man).
Dr Laryea said the needs of the country in science and technology was growing and therefore polytechnics should step up their efforts as technical institutions to aid in development.
To the Takoradi Polytechnic in particular, he said “With the oil find in this region, you have no alternative than to carry out major research works”.
Dr Laryea said the influx of people into the region required research to improve the state of buildings, roads and other social amenities that would be needed.
