Dr Kodwo Edusei, a lecturer at the College of Arts, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has called on teachers to help the youth and students to appreciate the nation's rich cultural heritage.
He said the disregard for cultural and traditional values, especially by the youth has resulted in indiscipline and social tension.
Dr Edusei was speaking on the topic: "visual arts education in the school system in Ghana", at a day's seminar organized by the Ashanti
Regional branch of the Ghana Arts Teachers Association for teachers, in Kumasi.
He said the introduction of visual arts at the basic education level was aimed at addressing 'the cultural gap in the school system left by the
missionaries."
Dr Edusei called on the authorities to incorporate the country's culture into the educational system.
He also said: "Art helps people to be initiative and subjective in thinking, which are relevant and necessary in this age of automation and computerization."
Mr Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, the Regional Director of Education, called for the promotion of art.
