The persistent attacks on personnel of the Ghana Police Service has compelled government to initiate measure to guarantee their safety and nip in the bud perpetrators of those illegal acts.
Therefore, the Police Administration is intensifying efforts to beef up its intelligence network and obtain the identity and motivation of those involved in such attacks and other violent crimes.
The Administration is also making efforts to identify sources of weapons production in the country to have those illegal sources brought
before justice.
Mr Martin Amidu, Interior Minister, who disclosed this at the government's monthly Meet-the-Press series in Accra on Tuesday, said
government was also liaising with the arms and ammunition unit of the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) to maintain a data base on all
magazines in the country.
He said government would supply adequate and standardised equipment such as head-gears, bullet proof vest and side arms for personnel of the
Service to ensure personal safety.
Mr Amidu said that efforts were on-going to adequately resource the Service through the provision of light armoured and riot control vehicles and other relevant infrastructure to enhance operations.
On the rising incidence of highway robbery, the Sector Minister said the Service was intensifying intelligence gathering on criminal activities, and carrying out robust patrols across the country to curtail that problem.
He said the Service was also taking other initiatives like the re-zoning of major towns and cities, sustenance of the reward system for
credible informants, replication of tent-city projects in other parts of Accra and some metropolis and improving Police-population ratio through recruitment, to minimise such issues.
