Dr Boateng Duah, a gynaecologist at the Ghana Port and Harbours Hospital, Takoradi, has advised pregnant women to take good care of themselves to ensure the proper development of their foetuses and their safe deliveries.
He said though pregnancy was not a disease there were induced diseases associated with it which called for proper care and attention.
In an interview with the GNA, on Tuesday, Dr Duah mentioned hypertension and diabetes as some of the pregnancy induced-diseases and advised expectant mothers to regularly attend ante-natal clinics and follow the instructions on their medication.
He stated:"Pregnancy is a beautiful experience, regardless of its associated complications, which are often manageable and even go off after delivery."
Dr Duah advised women to begin ante-natal care early. "As soon as a woman discovers that she is pregnant she must report to the health centre
for attention," he explained.
On diet, Dr Duah called for proper eating habits, which he stressed, was essential for every pregnant woman.
"The foetus depends on the mother for everything and so every pregnant woman should eat well for the proper growth and development of the baby."
He discarded the perception that egg and some sea-foods were not good for pregnant women, explaining that they contain chemicals that are good for both the mother and the unborn child.
