The National Identification Authority (NIA) will soon start the production of the National Identification Cards, an official source in Accra said on Monday.
The source told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra that it was ready to start the production of the Identity Cards with utmost integrity, professionalism and efficiency.
"The NIA is set to vigorously pursue other elements of the National Identification System given the completion of the construction of the National Data Centre building and the acquisition of equipment for ID card production," the source said.
It added that as part of measures to educate and sensitise the public on the National ID Card production, the NIA would engage the media on Wednesday, December 1 to kick-start activities to introduce the National ID (Ghanacard) to the public and outline the procedure and collection centres across the country.
The NIA source noted that the ID card would bear the personal information about the individual whose identity could be verified at all times and aimed at providing the public with added convenience and ease when conducting transactions with government and public sector institutions, civil society organisations and private sector businesses.
According to the source, the card utilised two types of biometric technology for identification purposes.
"These are the fingerprints which is unique to each individual in the form of digitised templates and facial dimension in the form of digitised colour photo of the card holder."
Both the fingerprints and photographs were captured during the mass registration together with other personal details and stored in the national database or register.
He said the NIA had deployed cutting edge technology that incorporated several layers of security features to make the card difficult to forge and protect the personal information stored on it.
Other features are a photograph of the card holder, along with name, address, date of birth and a personal identification number (PIN) that has been randomly generated and assigned to the holder.
A two-dimensional barcode at the back of the card also holds biometric information such as the holder's fingerprints in digitised templates as well as the holder's signature, which are unique to the individual.
