Muslims in south Indian state Kerala celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr on Friday, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramzan.
People congregated in large numbers in the mosques and Eidgahs across the state, where special prayers for Eid were held.
Religious scholars and community leaders called upon the people to re-dedicate themselves to the tenets of Islam to foster social and communal harmony.
Kerala Governor R S Gavai and Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan extended their greetings to the Muslims of the state on the occasion.
While Eid was celebrated in Kerala today, the National Capital Region (NCR) will celebrate the festival on Saturday.
The festival culminates fasting by devotees for a month during Ramzan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
As Islam follows a lunar calendar, the holy month begins every year about 11 days earlier and its commencement is traditionally determined by the appearance of the new moon.
