The Ghana office of the West African Examination Council has been advised to consider alternative options to give unsuccessful candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination the opportunity to re-sit their examination, the next year.
Mr Williams Boakye-Baafi, President of Ejisu Association of Catholic Teachers Trainees, who was speaking to the media, at Ejisu, in Ashanti, on
Tuesday, raised concerns about the fate of candidates who fail in the BECE.
He said the absence of any arrangement for these students to re-write the examination one year later, jeopardizes their future as they may lose the urge to continue their education with prolonged idling.
He said the current system under which candidates who wish to re-sit are made to join the second year class in the Junior High School denies
majority of them the chance to continue their education.
"This situation does not augur well for the nation's development since the education of the country's youth is critical in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals," he stressed.
Mr Boakye-Baafi, attributed the current high spate of social vices like armed robbery to youth unemployment resulting from circumstances forcing some of them to curtail their education.
