A former Bishop of the Church of South India (CSI) diocese, facing charges of misappropriating funds, has been arrested for not appearing before a local court in a threat case filed by a priest from Nilgiri district.
Manickam Durai had been summoned by a Gudalur court following a complaint filed by Priest Raviraj in Gudalur in Nilgiris district alleging that the former bishop had threatened him.
However, he failed to appear before the court after which the police arrested him from his residence yesterday morning and produced him before the judge.
Durai was also facing charges of misappropriating Rs three crore from the church funds. Following the incident, he was asked to go on leave by the church authorities.
Police suspected enmity to be the reason behind Durai's action.
