A one day symposium on wild and bush fires as well as climate change has ended in Techiman with a call on stakeholders to help combat bushfires to protect the environment.
The symposium was jointly organised by the Techiman Municipal Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Environmentally Concerned Citizens Association of Ghana (ECCAG), an NGO.
In attendance were Assembly Members, school children, civil organisations, traditional authorities and heads of departments.
Mr. Jibreel Kesse Labib, Municipal NADMO Coordinator, expressed regret about the wanton destruction of trees for fuel wood and charcoal burning.
He said the 2010 government policy on tree and bamboo plantation particularly along water bodies as well as documentary films on the environment would be meaningless if the people did not take precautionary measures against the destruction of endangered species.
Mr. J.Y. Aidoo, National President of the NGO, said more than 300 people especially the youth would be employed in each of the 170 districts and municipalities where the policy would be implemented.
