Baffour Kwasi Afrifa I, the chief of Akim Peseato in the Fanteakwa District, has called on Churches and opinion leaders to assist traditional authorities in abolishing outmoded customs and traditions.
He noted that obsolete traditional practices and norms had impeded progress, and called for a critical look at them to ensure the socio-economic development of the people.
Baffour Kwasi Afrifa was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Akim Peseaso at the weekend.
He said traditional practices such as "trokosi," female genital mutilation and widowhood rites did not only affect development but also violated the rights of individuals, especially women and children.
Baffour Afrifa asked parents to ensure that their children studied at home after school instead of attending funerals and other social activities.
