Ghana Cinema Week 2024, an initiative of National Film Authority (NFA) to promote Ghanaian films has kicked off in Accra.
This year’s Cinema Week which kicked off on Saturday, December 14 till Sunday, December 22 is dedicated to showcasing the impressive work of Ghanaian filmmakers, animators, and game developers.
It similarly aims at promoting and celebrating Ghanaian-made films, animations, and games, encouraging patrons to engage with and support the country's thriving creative industry.
Throughout the campaign period, Ghanaian filmmakers will take center stage, showcasing their remarkable productions that have been making waves in the industry.
This is an excellent opportunity for audiences to experience the best of Ghanaian storytelling and creativity.
At the opening on Saturday, patrons at the Silverbird Cinemas, Accra Mall, watched movies, Begyina and Breathe Again by young filmmakers, Eunice Obeng Agyei and Kakra Opare Asiedu.
Some of the filmmakers shared their inspiration for getting into filmmaking as well as what shaped their stories.
“We have some really well-done films by Ghanaian filmmakers this year. Let's take time to see them during the Cinema Week Celebration,” Bismark Odum-Sackey of NFA said.
The Ghana Cinema Week has been initiated to most importantly shine a spotlight on two often-overlooked yet thriving sectors in Ghana: animation and gaming.
With Ghanaians spending a staggering $60 million on mobile games in 2022, and Ghana ranking among Africa's top gaming nations, the National Film Authority (NFA) is seizing the opportunity to redirect this financial flow back into the local economy.
This event promises to be a game-changer, showcasing a curated selection of films, animations, and games developed in Ghana.
Last year, Ghana Cinema Week was held in Kumasi and Tamale and the NFA has assured to hold it in other regions in future.
