Kai Havertz (Germany)
Versatile attacker/midfielder Kai Havertz comes into Euro 2024 having enjoyed an outstanding season with Arsenal. The Aachen-born player seemed a mis-fit at his previous club Chelsea (despite scoring the winning goal in a UEFA Champions League final for them in 2021) but has found his best form with the Gunners despite being played in numerous different positions. He will likely feature as a centre-forward for Germany at the European Championship and will be expected to both provide and finish off scoring chances.
John McGinn (Scotland)
All-action midfielder John McGinn will be vital to Scotland’s hopes of advancing from a tough Group A at Euro 2024. The 29-year-old midfielder has been at the heart of an Aston Villa team which enjoyed an excellent campaign (including qualifying for the UEFA Champions League) and he will be expected to translate that form to the Tartan Army in Germany. McGinn has a great eye for a pass, scores important goals and is renowned for his mobility and ground-covering ability, both in and out of possession.
Dominik Szoboszlai (Hungary)
Dominik Szoboszlai was selected as Hungary’s captain when he was just 22 years of age, such is the trust and belief that the national team’s hierarchy have in the midfielder. Szoboszlai will come into Euro 2024 on the back of a fine debut season with Liverpool, where he exhibited all the characteristics that have marked him out as a generational talent in his country: fine technical ability, aggression in defence, a good passing range and thunderous long-range shooting ability.
Granit Xhaka (Switzerland)
After he left Arsenal at the end of the 2022-23 season, many assumed that Granit Xhaka would drop off the radar. Instead, he was the driving force behind Bayer Leverkusen’s incredible campaign and comes into Euro 2024 full of confidence that he can do something for Switzerland. An all-action midfielder who possessed a powerful left foot, Xhaka boasts over 120 caps for the national team and has played at three World Cups and two previous European Championships.
