The Young Men Christian Association (YMCA), Ghana has organised a one-day training workshop in Accra for the media on “how to use film as a medium to achieve social change”.
The workshop saw media personalities from both state-owned media houses and private media, taken through lessons on how to tell stories through film to achieve social change.
Mr Samuel Asamoah, Programmes Director at YMCA, Ghana said the programme was part of YMCA’s effort to contribute back to the society by equipping young professionals in their field of work.
He said the programme was a partnership with Weltfilme.org and funded by the German Development Corporation.
“We are looking to equipping more young people to be able to have the right skills and the right equipment to tell the Ghanaian story in the Ghanaian way. We are also looking to helping young people improve on their skills to be able to build a profession within this field for themselves and their families,” he said.
“We trained some of these young people in March, July and then August. Our training model is such that we give you the right information and after that, we give you our camera equipment to go out and demonstrate.
“So far we have three short movies and three documentaries, which would be premiered on the 6th of December. And those short films and documentaries response to the needs of persons with disabilities and marginalised in society. So the documentaries are telling their story and giving them a voice.”
