Whenever an exchange makes changes, whether it's an update, a new listing or a removal, scammers could use it as an opportunity. These are the moments when people are most likely to act with urgency, which is exactly why it helps to know the warning signs.
Scammers don't need to understand the details of what is changing, all they need is for people to be distracted, uncertain and more willing to act quickly. The good news is that the signs of a scam rarely change, even when the trigger does, which means increased awareness goes a long way.

Here are 5 helpful tips to protect yourself:
1. Someone reaches out to you, unprompted: Legitimate companies don't contact you first offering to "assist" with your account. If contact like this arrives out of the blue, don't engage with it.
2. They ask for your private codes: No genuine company will request your recovery phrase or private codes. A request of this nature isn't protecting your funds, it's finding a way to get access to them.
3. They push you to act immediately: "Do this now or lose everything" is designed to trigger panic, not clear thinking. Real updates come with fair warning, not last-minute pressure.
4. The link looks almost right, but not quite: Scam links are often near-perfect copies of the real thing, sometimes altered by just a single character. Type web addresses in yourself or navigate through the official app.
5. The offer feels a little too generous: Bonus rewards or better-than-usual rates tied to a particular link are a classic lure. If it sounds better than what has been officially announced, it should be cause for concern and caution.
None of this requires deep technical knowledge, just a habit of pausing when something triggers doubt and confirming through official channels before acting on it.
"Scammers don't create windows of opportunity, they wait for them," said Larry Cooke, Binance Africa. "Exchanges evolve constantly; however, a moment of change is a window which is why our advice stays the same: pause, and always confirm through official channels before you act."
Binance said it will continue to invest in user education and safety awareness across its African markets as its platform continues to evolve.
