The development of trade in LLDCs of North and Central Asia faces several structural and institutional challenges, including export concentration in commodities, inefficient trade procedures, and insufficient implementation of regional cooperation agreements. International trade and trade facilitation was recognized as a priority area of the Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries for the Decade of 2014-2024 (henceforth referred to as “VPoA”), adopted at the Second United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries. The VPoA focused on addressing the challenges faced by LLDCs through specific actions in its priority areas. The importance of digital trade, trade facilitation, and regional cooperation and integration was emphasized by LLDC representatives at both regional and global levels. These key areas will continue to be prioritized in the new programme of action for the upcoming decade.
Countries in North and Central Asia have committed to boosting their mutual trade turnover and complementarities by strengthening regional economic cooperation and integration. The main objective of the Expert Group Meeting on Leveraging Transformative Potential of Trade and Trade Facilitation for Sustainable Development in North and Central Asia (EGM) to be held on 6 and 7 March 2025 in Almaty, Kazakhstan and online is to discuss emerging priorities related to trade and trade facilitation in North and Central Asia
