The Oheneba Poku Foundation has called on AngloGold Ashanti to reassess its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes to ensure they effectively address the pressing needs of the Obuasi community.
“This includes prioritising employment opportunities for local youth, infrastructure development, and initiatives that enhance livelihoods,” the foundation said in a statement.
The statement, issued by the Chairman of the foundation, Oheneba Nana Kofi Poku, follows an alleged attempt by some youth in the community to occupy a section of AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mine concession. The situation resulted in a military intervention, which reportedly led to the death of some of the youth.
In response, the government has ordered an investigation into the incident.
Call for dialogue
The foundation urged stakeholders, including AngloGold Ashanti and the Obuasi community, to engage in “constructive dialogue to address the grievances.”
It also advocated for a model of shared prosperity between mining companies and host communities, emphasising the need for equitable distribution of mining benefits, including royalties and other resources, to foster local development and reduce socio-economic disparities.
The statement highlighted the significance of the Africa Responsible Mineral Sourcing Initiative (ARMSi), which promotes ethical sourcing, transparency, and sustainability in the mineral sector.
“Through ARMSi, we call on stakeholders across Africa’s mining industry, including AngloGold Ashanti, to align their operations with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles. ARMSi provides a platform for fostering partnerships that ensure responsible mining practices while safeguarding the rights and livelihoods of local communities,” the statement said.
“We urge AngloGold Ashanti to join ARMSi and publicly commit to adopting its guidelines, including transparency in revenue allocation, community engagement, and environmental stewardship,” it added.
Environmental sustainability
The foundation stressed the need for AngloGold Ashanti to prioritise environmental sustainability, calling for immediate and transparent discussions on the environmental impact of its operations. It further recommended actionable plans for land reclamation, pollution control, and community health safeguards.
“The Oheneba Poku Foundation remains committed to supporting initiatives that foster harmony, equity, and sustainable development in mining communities. As part of our ARMSi campaign, we are open to working with AngloGold Ashanti, the Obuasi community, and other stakeholders to provide technical, advisory, and community engagement support to resolve this impasse.
“Together, let us ensure that mining serves as a tool for shared prosperity, ethical sourcing, and sustainable development in Africa,” the statement concluded.
