THE Spouses of the Board of Governors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and some staff have donated an amount of GH?35,000 to support the Osu Children Home in Accra.
The amount is expected to be used to support the upkeep of the children at the orphanage.
The donation was made as part of activities of the 2022 Annual Meetings of the AfDB which was held in Accra.
Presenting the amount to the management of the home at a brief ceremony, the Wife of the AfDB President, Grace Adesina, said the donation was to support the education, health and general upkeep of the children.
"In line with the vision of the AfDB to improve lives and livelihoods, we the spouses of the Board of Governors of AfDB, Directors and staff decided to contribute our widow's mite for the running of the Home," she said.
Mrs Adesina said the Home needed the support of the wealthy in society to operate.
She entreated the children not to lose hope but work hard to become responsible people in future.
She said their beginning should not demoralise or botched them down, saying the society loved them.
Mrs Adesina lauded the management, staff, and guardians for their hard work and urged them to continue to love the children.
Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, who chaired the programme told the children that God gave them their family for a purpose.
"Society loves you and there are people outside who think about you," she said.
The Director of Social Welfare, Reverend Comfort Asare, in his remarks said the Home was established in 1948 to care for vulnerable children, children without families and abused children in society. She said the Home provided education and skills training for the children.
Rev Dr Asare said the Home for the past two years had reunited with their families.
She lauded the spouses of the Board of Governors, Directors and staff for their decision to visit the Home.
The Deputy Director at the Osu Children’s Home, Yvonne Norman, said donation to the home dwindled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She said the Home needed medical bills, children allowances and needed more funds to meet such obligations.
