President Akufo-Addo encourages traders to learn from Sekondi-Takoradi market social distancing model
The President, Nana Akufo-Addo has called on market women and traders across the country to emulate the unique Social distancing model currently practised by traders within markets in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region.
The fight against the COVID-19 according to the President must surely be won and that all protocols must be carefully respected, to curb the spread and help the government to manage the current records well through appropriate health interventions.
The President on his eighth address to the Nation on the disease lauded the market women in the twin-city for observing good social distancing which was key in controlling the spread.
The President said, "The example of Markets in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis where social distancing is being well observed, is an excellent one for market women all over the country".
The Authorities of the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly relocated over 800 traders from the Central Business District (CBD) of Takoradi to the Jubilee park as a measure to decongest the CBD and help in creating enough space for a healthy business environment.
The viral disease according to health experts "feared proper hand washing with soap under running water, frequent hand sanitizing and above all social distancing since it was a contagious virus that could be caught in the air".
Nana Asempanaye II,the Sub-metro Director described the Assembly's action as key to avoiding overcrowding that characterized the CBD to prevent the spread of the virus.
So far, the Western Region has recorded one imported case, when a Chinese National working for a quarry company in the Shama District was confirmed positive of the virus early April.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, the Minster for Tourism Arts and Culture recently proposed a shift system across the country's markets to control overcrowding among others.
