The Money lenders Association of Ghana has been renamed Micro-Credit Association of Ghana (MCAG) to give it a new image. Mr. Frank Mawutorborbor, its Executive Secretary, said the name change was meant to shed off the negative connotation.
Speaking at a workshop held by the association with support from the Business Advocacy and Challenge Fund (BUSAC) in Koforidua, he said the Bank of Ghana (BOG) had given approval to that. The new identity, he noted, could enable it to access low interest international funds.
He spoke of how in the past, both local and international financial institutions with low interest funds, had refused to make monies available to their members to expand their operations, largely because of the previous name. He underlined the vital contribution the micro credit companies were making to the fight against poverty.
He gave the assurance that they would continue to provide credit to individuals and businesses in a regulated, market-driven environment to help make things better. Mr. Seth Okyere-Dankwa, Zonal Chairman of MCAG for Eastern and Volta Regions, reminded the members to operate within the stipulated rules and regulations. They should keep proper records and adopt best practices, he added.
