Ms. Sherry Ayitey, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister, has assured fishermen of increased government’ support to grow their business. She said it would continue to take steps to assist safeguard their safety, that of their canoes, outboard motors, nets and other fishing inputs.
She was speaking during a visit to some fishing communities in the Fanteakwa District in the Eastern Region. Ms. Ayitey made reference to the launch of the nationwide Fishermen Life Insurance Scheme (FLIS) and said they were targeting to freely register one million of them onto the scheme.
The FLIS is a partnership between the Ministry and Star Micro Insurance Service.
She indicated that it was part of the deliberate effort to strengthen the fisheries sector of the economy for optimal performance. The Minister was in the area to interact and learn at first hand the challenges faced by the fish farmers and processors. Ms. Ayitey announced plans to build a “Chokor smoker” for the fish smokers along the Volta Lake.
The farmers should also look for an appropriate landing beach site to enable them receive subsidized premix fuel to promote their business. The Minister distributed fish smoking materials including pans, wire mesh and baskets to fish smokers in 15 communities.
