The Biriwa Landing Beach Committee has realized GHC 167,48 from the sale of premix fuel in 16 months to support development project.
The Landing Beach Committees were inaugurated in August 2009 along the coastal towns and the Volta Lake to sell premix fuel to fishermen and use the money accrued for a development projects to be decided by the community.
Addressing fishermen at Biriwa, near Cape Coast, Mr Stephen Moore, Mfantseman West Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, cautioned members of the committee or any other fisherman from buying the fuel from any other places or sources for resell to fisherman at exhorbitant prices.
Mr Moore said it was only the government which produced premix fuel and it had selected landing beach committees to be its agent in the sale of the fuel.
He said NDC would not hesitate to cause the arrest of anyone found selling the fuel illegally.
Mr Moore urged people of Biriwa to be watchdogs for the sale of the fuel.
He appealed to government to enforce the law enacted to ban “light” fishing and the use of chemicals in the fishing industry since the practice prevalent in some communities, especially Elmina and Sekondi.
Mr I.K. Quayson a member of the committee, appealed to the National Premix Committee to increase the supply of the fuel to the town since once in a week supply was woefully inadequate for the fishermen.
Mr Kobena Abakah, an opinion leader, said the community had decided to use the money to support the construction of a street in the town which they started last year.
The premix sale success story prompted the community to demand accountability from the people in-charge some of the community’s projects including the Baobab Health Centre in the town, a machine shop and the estate house which had been rented to the Biriwa Community Bank.
