Vice President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur on Monday lauded the United Nations (UN) Agencies in Ghana for the initiatives they have undertaken in the national development process, and advocated effective coordination between the Agencies the Government of Ghana to achieve the desired results.
He expressed the conviction that improved coordination between the Government and those Agencies would help prevent duplication of efforts and also bring about more efficiency in the implementation of initiatives.
Vice President Amissah-Arthur who made the point when Heads of the UN Agencies in Ghana called on him at the Flagstaff House in Accra, praised the collaboration between the Government and the Agencies, but said there was room for improvement.
The meeting was to discuss challenges affecting the work of the UN agencies in the country and to identify ways of enhancing their collaboration with Government for mutual benefit.
Vice President Amissah-Arthur expressed Ghana's appreciation for the support offered within the UN's Development Framework for Ghana, and said the initiatives were helpful to Ghana.
He assured them of government's continued commitment to its partnership with the UN, and expressed the optimism that the challenges facing the agencies would be adequately addressed.
Madam Ruby Sandhu-Rojon, UN Resident Coordinator, who led the UN team, said the agencies provided a collective capacity of expertise to support the Government to resolve development challenges.
She said the UN Agencies had been working with the government to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and praised Ghana for making significant strides in achieving a number of the goals in the areas of poverty reduction, food security, health, maternal mortality, education, nutrition, and sanitation
The Resident Coordinator also assured the government of continued assistance and cooperation, indicating that the welfare of the citizenry was of paramount interest to the UN agencies.
