Zurich-based Hitachi Energy has been chosen as the technology provider for the UK's longest High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link, bolstering power transmission and supporting renewable electricity generation.
Hitachi Energy, a global leader in sustainable energy solutions, has been selected as the preferred technology provider for the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2), the longest High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnection in the UK. The company will supply two cutting-edge HVDC converter stations to connect the Scottish and English power grids, ensuring secure and efficient power transmission while facilitating the integration of renewable energy.
The EGL2 project, a collaboration between SSEN Transmission and National Grid, aims to deliver a total of 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This substantial capacity is sufficient to power around two million homes in the UK, contributing significantly to the country's net-zero ambitions.
Hitachi Energy's expertise in voltage sourced converter (VSC) power electronics and their state-of-the-art control and protection (MACH™) technologies will play a crucial role in making the grid resilient, stable, and flexible. These innovative solutions have been successfully deployed in other landmark grid integration projects worldwide, making Hitachi Energy a perfect fit for EGL2.
The project will feature two 525-kilovolt (kV) bipole VSC converter stations, connected by 440 kilometers of subsea cable and 70 kilometers of underground cable. The scale and complexity of EGL2 make it the longest HVDC link in the UK, marking a significant milestone in the nation's efforts to transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
One of the primary objectives of EGL2 is to support the integration of new renewable electricity generation in Scotland, an area with the potential for up to 11,000 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. HVDC transmission will play a critical role in bringing this vast amount of renewable power to communities across the country, enabling a more widespread use of clean energy sources.
Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy's Grid Integration business, emphasized the importance of the project in meeting the UK's Net Zero Strategy. "The UK's Net Zero Strategy has ambitious targets which will require vast amounts of new renewable generation. Electricity will be the backbone of the entire energy system," he said. "Our pioneering HVDC technology will ensure that this electricity will reliably and efficiently get where it's needed most."
The project's partners, including construction company BAM Nuttall, are committed to working collaboratively to ensure the successful delivery of the Eastern Green Link 2. Huw Jones, Executive Director of BAM Nuttall, expressed their enthusiasm for the project's contribution to the UK's net-zero ambitions, emphasizing the importance of delivering sustainable infrastructure for the benefit of stakeholders and local communities.
Hitachi Energy's long-standing expertise in commercial HVDC technology, dating back nearly 70 years, and their impressive track record of delivering HVDC projects worldwide make them a trusted and reliable partner for this critical venture.
As the world shifts towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, initiatives like EGL2 demonstrate the importance of advanced technologies and collaborative efforts to achieve a greener future. Hitachi Energy's involvement in this significant project not only bolsters the UK's energy infrastructure but also accelerates the global transition towards a carbon-neutral future.
